India’s National AIDS Control Board has recently granted permission for the building and implementation of 10 care centers to provide education, shelter, medical care, clothing and food for Indian children orphaned by AIDS.
The National AIDS Control Board held a meeting on June 11th to address the dire and growing situation of AIDS in India; the Indian government has been criticized in past years for ignoring the plight of orphans and the waxing AIDS epidemic. According to the Times of India, the country is currently facing a statistic of 70,000 AIDS infected children, a number that is staggering and steadily increasing. Planning and organizing has already begun for the newly approved centers, as well as initiatives for grant distributions. Each center will be administered by an NGO and staffed with medical professionals and teachers. Applications for NGOs interested in the new project will be available in July.
