President Bush signed new legislation in July to reauthorize PEPFAR's programs.
The President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS relief (PEPFAR), first implemented in 2003, was reauthorized on July 30th, 2008. To date, more than 6.6 million people, including 2.7 million orphans and vulnerable children, have been provided with HIV treatment and financial support by PEPFAR’s programs. PEPFAR’s new legislation authorizes the continuation of financial and medical assistance until 2013, with goals to support treatment for more than 12 million, including 5 million OVC. Global Action for Children took action to ensure that 10% of PEPFAR's reauthorization funding would support orphans and vulnerable children. Thanks to their efforts, the new bill authorizes $48 billion with $3 billion allocated to orphans and vulnerable children, a noteworthy increase. Thank you to all who took action and supported this effort.
PEPFAR’s reauthorization and additional funding will provide the financial means to continue the battle against HIV/AIDS.
