            <description><![CDATA[In the Portland OR area, PAGAC (Portland Area Global AIDS Coalition) supports over 200 organizations working with HIV positive people globally; 25 of these organizations will be present at the World AIDS Orphans Day Event. Under the moderation of Michael Kaplan (Executive Director, Cascade AIDS Project), this event will open dialogue with the public about a pandemic that still exists with over 16 million AIDS orphans worldwide, and help to inform state, national, and international policy. The event will have expert panelists such as Barry Childs, Laura Peterson, Shelly Krebs, and Belinda Beresford.  These panelists are working directly with AIDS orphans, families and will discuss solutions to the crisis.]]></description>

There are several campaigns going on concurrently to end vertical transmission of HIV from mother to child by 2015 by enabling pregnant women with HIV and newborn babies born to positive mothers universal access to ARV meds. Pediatric HIV is an entirely preventable disease.]]></description>

The life expectancy is just 40 years and 1 in 6 children will die before their sixth birthday. Over half of the country’s 11.9 million population lives on less than $1 a day and 70% live in rural areas, meaning that many do not have access to important services, such as health care and a basic education, or the guarantee of at least one daily meal.]]></description>
